Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career.
